COX, ROBERT. H., Determinants of systemic hydraulic power in unawsthetizcd dogs. Am. J. Physiol. 226(3) : 579-587. 1974.-The characteristics of hydraulic power delivery to the systemic circulation by the left ventricle were studied in 16 trained, unanesthetized, chronically instrumented dogs. Measurements of ascending aorta flow, and ascending aorta, left ventricular, and central venous pressures were made under control conditions and during the injection of various neurohumoral agents. Cardiac output averaged 132 ml/min per kg at a mean arterial pressure of 98 mmHg and an average heart rate of 96 beats/min under control conditions. Total systemic hydraulic power averaged 7 13 mW with oscillatory power averaging 2Ooj, of the total. Norepinephrine increased total power to 935 mW with oscillatory power averaging 19%. Angiotensin produced no significant change in total power, but oscillatory power averaged 1 4y0. Isoproterenol increased total power to 1,129 mW with oscillatory power averaging 32 7& The oscillatory power fraction of total power was a strong function of heart rate under all conditions. Values of hydraulic fluid impedance for the ascending aorta were also calculated. Similarities of the impedance spectra for the various conditions were observed. The hydraulic power delivered to the systemic circulation as well as its components were found to depend on a) heart rate, b) left ventricular afterload (arterial pressure), and c) the inotropic state of the left ventricle.

Observations on the regulation of arterial blood pressure in unanesthetized dogs.
Aortic pressure rises as a dog's head is raised and falls as it is lowered. Systemic pressure change was 49% ± 3% of the hydrostatic pressure change at the carotid sinus, chosen as an arbitrary reference, so that pressure at the carotid sinus changed only 51% as much as it would have if systemic pressure had not changed. The responses to head raising and lowering were dynamically asymmetrical, ...
متن کاملModulation of coronary autoregulatory responses by nitric oxide. Evidence for flow-dependent resistance adjustments in conscious dogs.
The present study tested the hypothesis that nitric oxide production in coronary resistance vessels is an important mechanism affecting the regulation of myocardial perfusion in unanesthetized dogs. We inhibited nitric oxide synthesis with the arginine analogue N omega-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 10 mg/kg) and maintained the compressive determinants of myocardial blood flow constant ...
متن کاملThree-dimensional Power Doppler Ultrasonographic Evaluation of Induced Cystitis in Dogs
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate if three-dimensional power Doppler (3DPD) ultrasound (US) can detect bacterial cystitis in dogs better than two-dimensional (2D) US. Animals: Six mixed breed dogs Procedures: Ten ml of 0.1% alcoholic solution of salicylic acid was entered into the urinary bladder of six male mixed-breed dogs by catheter. Twenty four hours later, culture sol...
متن کاملResponse time and sensitivity of the ventilatory response to CO2 in unanesthetized intact dogs: central vs. peripheral chemoreceptors.
We assessed the speed of the ventilatory response to square-wave changes in alveolar P(CO2) and the relative gains of the steady-state ventilatory response to CO2 of the central chemoreceptors vs. the carotid body chemoreceptors in intact, unanesthetized dogs. We used extracorporeal perfusion of the reversibly isolated carotid sinus to maintain normal tonic activity of the carotid body chemorec...
متن کاملCardiac responses to sympathetic stimulation.
The cardiac res|x>nses to stimulation of sympathetic nerves to the heart were studied both in thoracotomized and in intact unanesthetized dogs. The changes in heart rate, left ventricular pressure, right and left ventricular dimensions and systemic arterial pressures were recorded. The powerful effects of sympathetic stimulation resemble cardiac responses to exercise more than those following a...
